Childhood Disintegrative Disorder is a rare disorder that tends to affect boys more than girls. It is thought to be 10 times less comon than autistic disorder/autism. The cause is unknown but evidence suggests it arises as a result of some form of central nervous system pathology.

Characteristics include:

*Normal development, generally up to age 2 years.

*From ages 2 - 10, acquired skills are almost lost completely in at least two of the following six functional areas:
Expressive/Receptive language skills
Self-care skills
Control over bladder and bowel
Social skills
Play skills
Motor skills

(There is some question of whether the children ever had the above skills from birth to 2 years of age. When their parents go back and look at old family videos, they recognize some behaviors of Childhood Disintegrative Disorder).

*Lack of normal function or impairment also occurs in at least two of the following three areas:
Social interaction
Repetitive behavior and interest patterns
